    Mesembryanthemum oculatum buds

    Mesembryanthemum oculatum buds
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

A Mesembryanthemum oculatum bud is well-rounded around the ovary in its lower part. The five leaf-like sepals above are unequal, long and erect above it. Sepals curve in over the youngest buds and start spreading when the petals appear.

Lower sepal parts are hairy as the stems, while water cell cover the surface, similar to those on the leaves (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Smith, et al, 1998; Herre, 1971; iNaturalist).
