    Asclepias crassinervis purple coronas

    Asclepias crassinervis purple coronas
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The conspicuous central floral part of Asclepias crassinervis, the five-lobed corona, looks like five purple penguins eating ice-cream around a table. The table-top is the staminal column, the penguins the corona lobes. The five-pointed style-tip is five-pointed, depressed in the centre (Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
