    Zygophyllum retrofractum flower and fruit

    Zygophyllum retrofractum flower and fruit
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Louis Jordaan

The flowers of Zygophyllum retrofractum grow solitary, occasionally in pairs. The stalked flower has five fleshy, oblong sepals, leaf-like and dull green.

The five, small, white or pale yellow petals are translucent. The stamens are exserted on whitish filaments bearing yellow or purple, ribbed, pale-brown anthers. There is also a bud about to open in the photo.

Flowering happens from winter to summer, peaking around the end of spring (Van Rooyen and Van Rooyen, 2019; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
