Englerophytum magalismontanum brown young stem

The stem of Englerophytum magalismontanum is where flowering and fruiting happens, protected in some leaf shade and half-heartedly concealed. Every fruit eater familiar with the veld where stamvrug grows, knows where to find the edible fruit.

The hairy brown young stems are very similar to the curved, sturdy leaf petioles. A glimpse of the brown-haired lower leaf surface is available in the photo (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
