    Brabejum stellatifolium young spikes

    Brabejum stellatifolium young spikes
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The young Brabejum stellatifolium inflorescences are spikes from leaf axils; actually spike-like racemes. The flowers emerge in pairs from the axils of short-lived, ovate, hairy bracts, in picture still covering most of the upper flowers-to-be.

In picture, the bracts are rusty brown, assuming their dark colour near maturity after starting off pale cream. Green pollen presenter style tips protrude from some buds in picture (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
