    Apatesia helianthoides long-stalked flowers

    Apatesia helianthoides long-stalked flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The flowers of Apatesia helianthoides grow solitary from leaf axils on long pedicels.

Inside the multitude of petals there is another multitude, this time of stamens that bend in on top of the ovary and curve up around the style and stigmas. The inner filaments are bearded at the base.

There is also a multitude of hair-like staminodes present, sterile (antherless) stamens that initially bend over the stamens before straightening.

The shallow ovary is inferior (in position), flat on top and sunk below into the centre of the calyx body (Le Roux, et al, 2005; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; Eliovson, 1990; Herre, 1971; iNaturalist).
