    Salvia disermas buds

    Salvia disermas buds
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The Salvia disermas buds are subtended at each level in the spike by broad-based, triangular bracts. The bracts have acutely pointed tips spread horizontally below the flowers.

The flowers present at each level also follow each other, representing different developmental stages. Hairiness abounds, even on the white, outer corolla surfaces.

The “beak” formed by the calyx does not open as widely as that of the corolla. The far exserted white style emerges tightly pressed against the top of the upper lip (Manning, 2009; iNaturalist).
