Pelargonium scabrum flower stigma, no anthers

Pelargonium scabrum flower stigma, no anthers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

This Pelargonium scabrum flower has bare white filaments, the male floral component gone AWOL.

The five short, pale pink stigma branches are dependent upon pollinators for ensuring fruitful progress in its ovary below, all in accordance with the established production plan.

The Mickey Mouse upper petals suggest a suitably perplexed facial expression for the flower, claiming innocence should a plea become necessary.

Note the stipules at the bases of leaf stalks.
