A Babiana mucronata subsp. mucronata flower is two-lipped; the lower lip is comprised of three shorter tepals. The lateral pair of these lower three shows some yellow towards the base, the central one having a unique mark fringed dark-blue down its centre.
The three deep-blue, club-shaped stigma branches stand taller in this flower than the stamens. The three pale blue anthers are oblong in shape. B. mucronata flowers have densely hairy ovaries (Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist; https://casabio.org).
