    Colchicum scabromarginatum desert sailboat

    Colchicum scabromarginatum desert sailboat
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Like an incongruous green sailboat lost on the rocky, semi-desert ground, Colchicum scabromarginatum is unconcerned about the impression it creates; now or once its flowers have appeared from among the erect bracts. If the nectar is good, the expense for decorating the eatery may not be warranted, depending on the clientele targeted in the business plan.

Annual leaves and flowers grow from the perennial corm late in winter to early in spring. The leaf margins are rough, sometimes reddish. The bracts may be paler than the leaves (Le Roux, et al, 2005; iNaturalist).
