    Viola decumbens two-tone flowers

    Viola decumbens two-tone flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

This purplish blue flowering Viola decumbens grew in Fernkloof at Hermanus. Apart from vein lines the petal bases are white on the inside. The outside petal surfaces of the pendulous flower in picture lacks the white colouring. It displays the narrow, pointed sepals, dark and spreading under the petals.

Petal tips are variously shaped. The spur present on the smaller lower petal of the two-lipped flower is not visible in the picture. The nodding flowers grow on long stalks from leaf axils (Manning, 2007).
