    Orbea hardyi flower, an airport

    Orbea hardyi flower, an airport
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The flowers of Orbea hardyi are smelly, an odour described as resembling that of rotting animal carcass baked in the sun. Such fragrance is sure to attract flies that anticipate something better than flowers, but pollinate them anyway while checking for food. Flower shape appears convenient, even inviting to visitors arriving by air.

Flowering happens from midsummer to early autumn (Hardy and Fabian, 1992; Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; http://llifle.com; www.succulent-plant.com).
