    Bijlia dilatata leaves

    Bijlia dilatata leaves
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Ivan Lätti

The thickly succulent Bijlia dilatata leaves are opposite, usually asymmetric with flat inside surfaces, deep off-centre keels and an angular paddle-shape, oblong or flattened upper part. Leaf surfaces are smooth, sometimes with small indentations but hairless. The leaf colour is pale green, nearly whitish to grey-green. The leaf dimensions are from 2 cm to 5 cm long, 1 cm to 2 cm wide and 8 mm to 16 mm thick near the apex.

Fruit capsules are relatively large, tending to persist on the plant. The capsule has five locules. Covering membranes are present (Smith, et al, 1998; Labarre, (Ed.), 1931; www.llifle.com).
