    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Some fynbos shrubs are adapted to grow close to the sea, thriving in dune sand as these specimens are clearly doing. It was found flowering in August. More than half of the 33 Metalasia species that exist grow in the Western Cape.

Metalasia flowers are often white, but there are several species with spectacular pink flowers. Some of the metalasias are found in the Eastern Cape coastal scrub and up the west coast of South Africa.
