    Satyrium neglectum

    Satyrium neglectum
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

Yet another grassland orchid, Satyrium neglectum flowers pink over a sea of green. Still, the specific name, neglectum (Latin), suggests that the plant is overlooked.

The narrow, cylindrical inflorescence is erect and slender. The twin spurs carried parallel to the ovary exceed it in length.

There are two subspecies of S. neglectum, viz. subsp. neglectum and subsp. woodii. Neither subspecies is considered to be threatened in habitat early in the twenty first century (www.africanorchids.dk; www.redlist.sanbi.org).
