    Satyrium macrophyllum

    Satyrium macrophyllum
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

Satyrium macrophyllum is a terrestrial orchid, a robust herb growing annual above-ground parts to 80 cm in height from a perennial subterranean tuber. The tuberous roots are sometimes eaten by people.

The lowest two leaves are sheath-like, the next two large and spreading, pale glossy green and ovate in shape. They become up to 24 cm long and 8 cm wide. Above them another up to six small, stem-sheathing and clasping leaves occur, grading into the bracts of the inflorescence.

    S. cheirophorum growing in East Africa is a similar species (Pooley, 1998; www.zimbabweflora.co.zw).
