    Orthochilus welwitschii flowers

    Orthochilus welwitschii flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The flowers of Orthochilus welwitschii are pale cream to bright yellow and funnel-shaped, the sepals and petals not spreading. The flower may be from 2 cm to 4 cm long.

The conspicuous part of this flower is for a change the maroon lateral lobes of the lip and not the bigger central one. The protruding middle lobe of the lip is festive as well, sporting a brighter yellow ring around the lip crest in the centre, adorned by unkempt, long, thin papillae. A slender spur, from 3 mm to 7 mm long is positioned below the back end of the lip (Pooley, 1998; Manning, 2009).
