Cussonia transvaalensis

Cussonia transvaalensis, the grey cabbage-tree is a small to medium sized, evergreen tree, usually single-stemmed and up to 5 m in height (SA Tree List No. 564.3). It has a sparsely branched crown; the one in picture not managing any, towering over Roossenekal grassland. The bark is grey, thickly corky and fissured.

The species distribution is north of the Vaal River and south of the Limpopo River, in North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces, all within the old Transvaal for which it was named. The habitat is rocky slopes in sandstone or quartzite (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002).
