    Searsia glauca stems

    Searsia glauca stems
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The stems of this Searsia glauca shrub seen on the Hoy Koppie in Hermanus in May are pale grey, almost white and smooth. The bark is covered in a powdery resin, similar to the coating found on the leaves.

New growth at the top of the plant is bright green here, sometimes reddish (Coates Palgrave, 2002).
