Conophytum velutinum subsp. velutinum

Seen from above, the flower of Conophytum velutinum subsp. velutinum shows a dense, multi-layered corolla of pink-purple petals. The petals are quite variable in size and shape as can be seen here. The inside of the flower column appears yellow from the top, with anthers and stigmas visible in the mouth.

The distribution of the plant lies in the Kommaggas region of Namaqualand, west of Springbok. The habitat is shaded or exposed places among rocks on granitic and quartzite slopes or among stones on flats. The plant population is stable early in the 21st century, not causing concern about the future of the species (Smith, et al, 1998).
