Haemanthus coccineus umbel

When the six to nine, more rarely four to thirteen stiff, red spathe valves of the Haemanthus coccineus flowerhead spread, a multitude of tiny, erect florets stand close together in view.

Their perianth tubes are cylindrical, swollen at the tips, and from 2 mm to 5 mm long. The tepals are spoon-shaped or oblong, from 12 mm to 26 mm long. The stamens are included or variably exserted, mostly red in variable shades. The oblong anthers produce yellow pollen. The nearly spherical, three-locular ovary is inferior and light green, about 3 mm in diameter. Its style is included or exserted, red more often than white (Duncan, et al, 2016; Duncan, 2010; Manning, 2009; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
