Gloriosa superba flower showing bent style

The Gloriosa superba flower has a three-locular, superior ovary. The stamens emerge from below it and are free from it. Many ovules reside in one ovary. The yellow stamens in picture spread horizontally below the corolla that resembles a Turk’s cap. The red and yellow flower nods.

What is special in this photo is the greenish, thread-like style, positioned lower than the filaments, and bent sharply to the side, a feature of the genus. It ends in three short branches shown at the bottom of the photo. These style branches or stigmatic arms are here white-tipped.

The leathery capsule to follow, grown from the ovary, is three-valved and dehiscent (Manning, 2009; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
