Pterygodium magnum is the biggest South African terrestrial orchid. It is said to produce up to 100 flowers in an inflorescence during a good year, making it a good match for the Drakensberg, the biggest mountains of the country.
This orchid is often found growing among ouhout trees (Leucosidea sericea) in the montane grassland (Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist; JSTOR; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
