Brunsvigia bosmaniae different colours, same species

Brunsvigia bosmaniae different colours, same species
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Hendrik van Zijl

Colour contrast in early Brunsvigia bosmaniae inflorescences herald either the individual differences contained genetically within the species or indicate stage differences between developing plants.

Not only do the buds of individual flowers in the two emerging inflorescences differ in colour but also the spathes flanking the elongating buds and the peduncles below show it. Yes, only some plants are blonds!

The fully developed peduncles of B. bosmaniae are from 12 cm to 15 cm long and from 1,5 cm to 2 cm wide (Duncan, et al, 2016; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
