    Euphorbia maleolens cyathium

    Euphorbia maleolens cyathium
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The Euphorbia maleolens cyathia grow at or near stem-tips from the gaps between the tubercles. Cyathia and eventually the fruits are strongly pedicelled as in the photo. The stalks are about 1 cm long, persistent and later become woody. The cyathium is surrounded by a cup-shaped involucre.

The conspicuous white tubercle tip lesions indicate where the short-lived stem-tip leaves have dropped off (Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; iNaturalist; JSTOR; http://www.llifle.com).
