Polygala myrtifolia var. myrtifolia vein-lined buds

Polygala myrtifolia var. myrtifolia vein-lined buds
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The cluster of Polygala myrtifolia var. myrtifolia buds is produced in the form of a stem-tip raceme. It shows only the sepals. The outer three of them are green, the inner two purple to pink, here strongly vein-lined. The lowermost big buds are dominated by their colourful sepal pair, the later to flower ones near the stem-tip greener and smaller.

The base of the keel petal begins to protrude between the wing sepals on the flowers soonest to open (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; Coates Palgrave, 2002; iNaturalist).
