    Leucadendron platyspermum stem

    Leucadendron platyspermum stem
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Leucadendron platyspermum lower stems are woody, covered in pale grey and smooth bark.

The old female cones are persistent, their thick scales rigid in concentric rings. Each seed is surrounded by a membranous wing facilitating dispersal by wind (Mustart, et al, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; JSTOR; Wikipedia).
