    Chrysocoma ciliata branched styles

    Chrysocoma ciliata branched styles
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

There may be some shine on a Chrysocoma ciliata involucre, stem and leaves, caused by large surface cells.

The upper leaves adhere to the stem in their lower parts, curving out at their tips. About four different lengths of involucral bracts form the flowerhead cup. The recurving tips of the tubular disc floret perianths are rounded and fleshy.

Many two-branched styles of the bisexual disc florets are far exserted in the photo. These branches end in triangular appendages and sweeping hairs, for some reason showing up white in some cases here.

The anthers also generally have triangular appendages in flowerheads of the Chrysocoma genus (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
