    Cassine peragua fruits disappearing

    Cassine peragua fruits disappearing
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

When the ripe fruit of Cassine peragua drop off or are eaten by birds, these branched, short stalks remain. The dark purple fruit skins turn dull and wrinkle when ripe becomes an understatement.

One forlorn, yellow-green fruit is very late compared to its mates, but the photo was only taken in June. The tree normally fruits until August, so it might still complete its cycle, although by then lacking company (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
