    Lachenalia membranacea flower colour change

    Lachenalia membranacea flower colour change
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The purple and white tips of the inner Lachenalia membranacea perianth segments in the mid-section of the flower spike are the floral highlights of this plant. They even have some shine, while the yellow-green to olive tips of the outer segments of each open flower are short, blunt and dull.

At the top in picture, one miserable-looking failed flower represents those that mostly don’t make it at the tip of the inflorescence.

The lower flowers, yesterday’s glamour, have discoloured to dull purplish, their inner segments or tepals lasting the longest (iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
