    Lachenalia membranacea leaf spots

    Lachenalia membranacea leaf spots
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The solitary leaf of Lachenalia membranacea here borne near the ground is about oblong, its normally tapering upper part lost in earlier life. The leaf-base sheathes the stem loosely.

The leaf spots are variable in size, shape and distribution, dull purple in colour on the grey-green blade. Faint, parallel vein lines are just discernible on the leaf as well.

The flowers in picture appear in three distinct groups: The old ones below have faded, pale purple-brown perianths. The open ones in the mid-section of the spike are multicoloured with conspicuously whitish lower perianth parts. The upper ones, pink-purple and narrowly tubular, did not develop fully and don’t appear as if a normal floral life awaits them (iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
