Osteospermum sinuatum var. sinuatum floral contrast

Osteospermum sinuatum var. sinuatum floral contrast
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The new and old Osteospermum sinuatum var. sinuatum flowerheads in picture differ in the sizes of their discs. The initially green disc buds require less space, the spent old brown florets more once all their parts are fully developed.

The visible rays also differ in apparent size: the young ones spread, the old ones curl back in compact rolls, hiding the fact of no substantial change in length.

The visitor favours the younger head for reasons not hard to guess (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997).
