Brachystelma stellatum flower opening

The half-open flower of Brachystelma stellatum displays its long, brownish peduncle that appears fleshy and sparsely short-haired. The narrow sepals curve out in their pointed tips, to be pushed further back when the corolla relinquishes its cup-shape to spread fully. The sepals are glossy and dark red in parts.

The corolla lobes bulge strongly, their convex upper surfaces more notable at this early stage. The dull green inside tip parts of the corolla lobes seem to reduce in size as they open fully.

The leaf margins in view are dark red, particularly near their tips (Smith, et al, 2017).
