Schistostephium umbellatum is a shrub of the southern Cape and Langkloof fynbos, also found on forest margins.

It bears silvery leaves and discoid, pale yellow flowerheads. The tips of the inner bracts may protrude finger-like past the outer ring of tiny disc florets of the head.

The leaves remind of those of the silver tree of the Cape that grows much taller and belongs to the Proteaceae family. Schistostephium forms part of the Asteraceae family (Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
