Leucadendron gandogeri

Leucadendron gandogeri, the broad-leaved conebush, is a sturdy, rounded shrub growing from a single stem and reaching heights around 1,6 m.

The oval to elliptic leaves on female plants are bigger than those on male ones: 11 cm long and 3 cm wide on females, 8 cm long and 2 cm wide on the males. The leaves that have cartilaginous margins are only covered in fine hairs when young, glabrous when mature.

The species distribution is small, confined to the southwest of the Western Cape from Stellenbosch and the Hottentots Holland Mountains to Bredasdorp. This plant was seen in the Caledon Wildflower Garden.

The plants grow in dense stands among fynbos from sea level to 1350 m in sandstone derived soils. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; Rebelo, 1995; iNaturalist; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
