Berzelia albiflora two leaf orientations

The stem-tip leaves around this Berzelia albiflora inflorescence cohere in a narrow cylindrical grouping at the upper extreme in the new growth. They relax and spread quite abruptly into a consistent, wider orientation; the lower leaves more spaciously grouped. There may be a slightly lighter, yellower leaf colour associated with the narrower alignment.

The flowerheads in the centre have darker, shorter leaves that curve in more strongly in notable contrast to the main foliage around them. The budding inflorescence is dominated by green leaves and bracts, whitish signs of floral opening at head tips still in an early stage (Bean and Johns, 2005).
