    Arctopus echinatus leaves only

    Arctopus echinatus leaves only
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

No flower yet on this Arctopus echinatus plant. Only a prostrate leaf rosette is present, doing much to cover the soil of its claimed domain. The thick taproot enables the stemless plant to produce lavish foliage as here.

The thick petioles of older leaves below are hidden by the short inner ones on top in the rosette. The young leaves appear heart-shaped from being lobed at the base, while mature leaf bases are usually rounded, square or tapering obtusely (Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
