The leaves of Vitex obovata are variable between three to five leaflets in digitate arrangement. The leaflets are elliptic or obovate in shape, hairy on the lower surfaces and sometimes on top as well.

The flowers grow on branched peduncles in many-flowered clusters.

Two subspecies are recognised, viz. V. obovata subsp. obovata that is hairless on the upper leaf surfaces and with the central leaflets smaller than those of subsp. wilmsii the one with velvety leaf upper surfaces. The leaf in picture is subsp. obovata (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002).
