    Searsia angustifolia fruit in Jonkershoek

    Searsia angustifolia fruit in Jonkershoek
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Ivan Lätti

The willow karee is but one of the Searsia trees with narrow leaflets, although the specific name angustifolia, a Latin word meaning narrow leaves, was chosen to describe the feature in this species.

The cream coloured fruits are thinly fleshy and flattened. They become up to 5 mm in diameter, growing in dense clusters at stem-tips. Earlier there was a profusion of spring flowers. The male flowers exude a yeasty fragrance, attracting many insects (Coates Palgrave, 2002; iSpot).
