In habitat, stands of Watsonia pillansii can make an impression in rocky grassland, sometimes on steep slopes or thriving in seasonally moist places. Much of the plant’s distribution range receives summer rain, falling in the plant’s bloomtime.
In the southern Cape this plant hybridises naturally with W. knysnana (Pooley, et al, 2025; Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; Gledhill, 1981; iNaturalist).
