The stem of a Podocarpus henkelii tree is usually straight. The bark is brown or grey in several shades and eventually fissuring longitudinally in long strips on the larger trunks. When the strips peel, a reddish brown underbark is revealed.

When growing in the open, some lower branches, even ones near the base, may be retained as on the tree in picture. The smooth rope-like add-ons seen here are from a close friend of long-standing (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993; iNaturalist).
