Othonna retrofracta inflorescence

Othonna retrofracta inflorescence
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Louis Jordaan

The inflorescence of Othonna retrofracta is a loose stem-tip cluster of few flowerheads on naked peduncles. All the flowerheads are nearly presented at the same height, the inflorescence in picture about flat-topped.

In each head the five or about five pale green bracts form pronounced vertical ridges in a flat-topped barrel-shape while still closed, littered with florets and buds when open.

The brown-styled female florets of the outer ring in the disc open first, the yellow-anthered male ones in the centre following.

Flowering happens from late autumn to after midwinter (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
