Moraea macronyx, in Afrikaans known as the veldflap (veld iris), is a cormous, stemless and deciduous perennial that reaches heights from 9 cm to 15 cm.

Three to sometimes five long, hairy leaves are grown annually. They are grass-like, channelled and overlapping, without midribs and less than 1 cm wide.

The species distribution is in the Western Cape from the Koue Bokkeveld and the Cederberg through the Little Karoo, where the photo was taken, to Uniondale and the west of the Eastern Cape as far as Avontuur in the Langkloof.

The habitat is fynbos and renosterveld on rocky slopes in sandy soil. The habitat population is deemed of least concern early in the twenty first century (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org; http://redlist.sanbi.org).
