Edmondia sesamoides, a profusion of heads

Edmondia sesamoides, a profusion of heads
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: MC Botha

Numerous beady Edmondia sesamoides buds top the leafy, hairy stems. The stems are long and erect, the solitary buds all pointing up on a plant in robust and prolific form. The slightly pointed buds are nearing opening when their yellow disc florets will be exposed.

The involucres, here white on the outside, may also be pink or creamy-yellow and may change colour with age. The fruits to follow are cylindrical achenes, dry single seeded fruits that do not open when ripe (Manning, 2007; Bean and Johns, 2005; iNaturalist; JSTOR).
