Eriocephalus ericoides subsp. ericoides yellow anthers

Eriocephalus ericoides subsp. ericoides yellow anthers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Louis Jordaan

This Eriocephalus ericoides subsp. ericoides inflorescence shows the spaced green oblongs forming a single row of involucral bracts around each of the heads. The purple disc florets end in recurving corolla lobes.

Yellow anthers protrude above the five corolla lobes of some florets. Eriocephalus anthers lack spurs and tails but do have lance-shaped appendages at their tips.

The stiff peduncles present their heads nearly erectly to slightly angled out, stable landing sites for flying pollinators inflicting low body mass on flowers (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
