    Colchicum longipes flower

    Colchicum longipes flower
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Ivan Lätti

The greenish to pale yellow flower of Colchicum longipes grows on the ground in the plant base, not covered by the surrounding bracts that vary in size.

The perianth segments or tepals are small, in picture green and pointed, but may also be whitish. There are paired nectaries at the tepal bases above the tepal claws. In picture six flattish anthers bend inwards in a ring on green filaments around the three out-curving styles. Each style has a locule below, part of the superior ovary.

More than one flower may grow together, only one in the photo.

Blooming happens in winter and spring (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org; https://kumbulanursery.co.za).
