    Combretum apiculatum subsp. apiculatum flowers

    Combretum apiculatum subsp. apiculatum flowers
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Piet Grobler

The yellow to cream, bisexual flowers of Combretum apiculatum subsp. apiculatum grow in spikes from leaf axils. This may happen before there are leaves in spring, as in the picture. Flowering may, however, continue throughout summer, although less conspicuously.

The flowers are heavily scented. A spike is about 7 cm long and 1,5 cm in diameter (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Schmidt, et al, 2002; Leistner, (Ed.), 2000; iNaturalist).
