Streptocarpus dunnii budds

Streptocarpus dunnii budds
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The buds of Streptocarpus dunnii grow clustered on an erect peduncle that may succeed the earlier inflorescence, a many-flowered, elongated raceme above the leaf.

The deep orange-red flowers start off even darker in slightly club-shaped buds. Gland-tipped hairs may be present on the outsides of the buds. Several literature sources say that the plant produces only one leaf, but not all. The second, small leaf on to the left may be a second plant that started from seed or vegetatively, or belongs to the same plant (Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; Onderstall, 1984; Germishuizen and Fabian, 1982; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
