Lachenalia suaveolens flowers

Lachenalia suaveolens flowers
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Judd Kirkel Welwitch

The inflorescence of Lachenalia suaveolens is a many-flowered spike. The flowers spiralling around the central axis are sufficiently spaced for small, smooth stem-parts to show through. No bracts or pedicels are visible in picture.

The bulging, urn-shaped flowers are purple at the base. The short outer tepals are dark, nearly black on their square, flat tips, while the longer inner tepals are white-rimmed on the slightly out-curving tips.

The six stamens and the style of each flower are positioned inside the corolla, few parts visible at the mouth occasionally (Bond and Goldblatt; iNaturalist).
