Zygophyllum cordifolium prostrate branches

Zygophyllum cordifolium prostrate branches
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Zygophyllum cordifolium, sometimes called the heart twinleaf and in Afrikaans the sjielingbos (shilling bush) on account of its disc-shaped leaves that resemble coins, spread many branches across the beach sand here at Cape Columbine.

The yellow to nearly cream flowers have five spreading petals, variably marked red near the base, as many Zygophyllum species flowers have (Manning, 2009; Le Roux, et al, 2005; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
